FTP Site Security

FTP allows users to transfer files between two computers on the internet. It uses the internet communication language, TCP/IP protocols, to make the transfer of files possible. It is simple network protocol and was not intended to increase file transfer security. Many people use FTP websites, which are user friendly once a connection has been established. Clients are the programs that initiate a connection to a server.

Most of these websites require a user name and password to login. A lot of these websites will allow the users to use the word anonymous for their user name, but some still allow users to authenticate both user name and password. An IP address for an FTP is required to successfully connect to an FTP website. Users of FTP can download, upload, view, and update files in a very efficient manner.

When FTP is not properly configured it can be quite dangerous for users. Many viruses are able to sneak by unsuspecting sites or users. One of the main objectives of FTP is to satisfy the diverse needs of users through the easily implemented protocol design. FTP can be used in either an active or passive mode.

The FTP client and the FTP server must simultaneously open a port in order to establish an FTP session when in active mode. Users must configure their firewall in a way that accepts all incoming internet connections when in active mode. FTP users that chose passive mode are able to bypass many firewall issues because the FTP server is only required to open a port.

FTP websites have provided a valuable service that has been used by many businesses across the world. Information security is something businesses are constantly looking to improve and is the reason why many file transfer services, such as ShareFile, are used more prevalently than a traditional FTP site.

What Is Cache Memory?

We saw that the use of main memory helps in minimizing the disk-processor speed mismatch to a large extent because the rate of data fetching by the CPU from the memory is about 100 times faster than that from a high-speed secondary storage like disk. However, even with the use of main memory, the memory-processor speed mismatch becomes a bottleneck in the speed with which the CPU can process instructions because there is 1 to 10 speed mismatch between the processor and the memory. That is, the rate at which data can be fetched from memory is about 10 times slower than the rate at which CPU can process data. Hence, in many situations, the performance of processors gets limited due to the slow speed of memory. Obviously, the overall performance of a processor can be greatly improved by minimizing the memory-processor speed mismatch.

A primary storage or memory of a computer system is made up of several small storage areas, called locations or cells. Each of these locations can store afixed number of bits, called word length of that particular memory.

Cache memory is commonly used for minimizing the memory processor speed mismatch. Cache memory is an extremely fast, small memory between CPU and main memory whose access time is closer to the processing speed of the CPU. It acts as a high speed buffer between CPU and main memory and is used to temporarily store very active data and instructions during processing. Since the cache memory is faster than main memory, the processing speed is increased by making data and instructions needed in current processing available in the cache.

Upgrading Computer - New Vs Used

I am a computer admin for a distribution company and recently I was given a task of upgrading three computers to up to date technology. With budget in mind I started having a dilemma if either I should go with new or used computers, both had their pros and cons. After comparing prices I realized that used computers are way cheaper than new ones which should not come up as a surprise to anybody.

After compering several deals on eBay I realized that some of the big refurbishing seller even offer warranty. Since my experience with the seller was so good I purchased third computer from him as well. Once I received my third computer it turn out that hard drive was that came with it was dead. I have contacted the seller and he mailed me a replacement right away. I was shocked by this very good service.

Used computers may not be the best option for everybody as some people need operating system support. Those that need it should look for new systems as those tend to come with extra level of support. Simple Way To Create Strong Passwords

Strong passwords are essential to computer security. Everyone talks about them but how do you create a good and secure password? In this short article I'll give you a few examples of what a strong password is and how to create one that you'll be able to remember without having to write it down.

First, what makes a password "strong"? A strong password is one that meets the following requirements:

   1. At least 8 characters in length
   2. Uses upper and lower case letters (A-z)
   3. Includes numbers and symbols (1234%$#@)

Some examples of good passwords would be:

   1. 0dMi10yo!
   2. 1tmp?G1b
   3. Mf$wboJ9y!958

Great, we now have a strong password, but how do people ever remember those random characters? The truth is, those aren't random characters. The easiest way to create a strong password is to think of a phrase and then take the first letter of each word in that phrase to create the password.

Let's take the first example: 0dMi10yo!

I used this phrase to come up with the password: Our dog Max is 10 years old!

Notice that I substituted a zero "0" for the "O" for the first character. I also used the number "10" instead of spelling it out "ten". Those two things along with the exclamation point at the end give me a strong password.

Let's take the second example: 1tmp?G1b

The phrase I used for this password was: Is that my pen? Give it back

Instead of using "I" for the first character I used a "1". I also ignored the space between the two sentences.

Avoid using spaces in your password, they just lead to confusion.

The last example I gave was: Mf$wboJ9y!958

Here's the phrase I used: My friend Sam was born on July 9 year 1958

I switched the "S" for "$" and the "1" for "!".

That's all there is to creating a secure password that will keep your logins safe. So next time you change your password don't just add a 1 to the end of it, take a few minutes and think of a phrase that you'll remember and then create your new password.
